St Mary's Church

The tiny church at Kilvington was built in the middle of the 19th century after the death of the previous rector who, it is said, thought that with Staunton half a mile away, Kilvington had no need of its own church. The old building had been allowed to fall into ruin.  For a time it was for a time used as a sheepfold and was actually offered for sale as building material. Thankfully the new church is well maintained. It has some charming wall decorations and the position enjoys a glorious prospect over the Vale of Belvoir and into Lincolnshire.

The church is in a group of seven parishes known as the Octave group.  Services rotate on an approximately monthly basis.

Sadly, Flawborough Church closed in 2008, reducing the group from eight to seven.   The original church was 11th century although it was rebuilt in 1840.  Its closure is a sad loss, bringing to an end a thousand years of what we presume was continuous use as a place of worship.  Contemplating this length of time does certainly bring into focus the rich heritage of the villages in this area. Very often we fail to realise that what we often regard as day to day and ordinary is actually quite special and the closure emphasises to us that our local villages are worth preserving and defending.

The seven parishes are East Stoke, Elston, Kilvington, Shelton, Sibthorpe, Staunton and Syerston.

For more information, contact one of the church wardens Mrs Alexandra Norman ( a.norman@btinternet.com ) of Kilvington or Katie Allen (07910 294898).
