Neighbourhood watch
Alverton and Kilvington are members of neighbourhood watch. In
these villages, when many people are out during the day, we depend
on each other to act if something looks wrong. Do not be afraid to
report anything you think is suspicious. If someone's alarm goes
off, they will welcome it if you do something about it. Looking out
for other people is an important part of life in small villages.
The co-ordinator is Derek Kennedy, 01949 851198.
Here are a few basic security tips:-
- Lock windows and doors when you go out.
- Fit an alarm and use it. Many of the properties here are old
with solid floors so a wired alarm can be difficult to fit. Modern
wireless systems are cheap, easy to fit and above all very reliable.
- Avoid leaving car keys in the open around the house - thieves
sometimes break in just to find keys and drive your car away.
- Fit locks to outbuildings and use them - otherwise forget your
insurer paying out for theft from these areas.
- Make the house look lived in.
- Be wary of people selling things dor to door. This is often a
cover for more sinister activities. Jot down car numbers of callers
if you are suspicious.
- Swap keys with a neighbour and keep an eye on each other's
properties while each of you is away.
- And keep half an eye open for your neighbours' property as well.
