The Institute was formed in 1923 under the name Staunton W.I., later
Staunton & District W.I. A wooden hall was erected in Kilvington in 1929
and the present name was adopted. The building was the size of the
present main room and cost £139.3s.6d. The building was supposed to last
approximately 60 years but at 75 is is still going strong. A kitchen and
cloakroom were added in 1932.
Membership at foundation was 31 and in 1926, 35. Early members met in
the afternoons and most would walk or cycle to meetings. They worked
hard to get the money for their wooden hut and Mr G Burton gave them a
strip of land to build on at a peppercorn rent. Mr Fred Baker, who built
the extension, let them pay for the work done in installments.
Unfortunately the Institute had to close down temporarily during the
second world war but it was re-formed in January 1949.
These early members worked very hard to keep a meeting place for
themselves and the community. We are proud of our past and present
members would like interested ladies and girls to join us and enjoy the
company and friendship we all enjoy.
